Making Adaptive Equipment Work
(earn 5.7 NYPTA CH (Contact Hours)/.5 AOTA CEU*)
Participants in this course will examine a wide variety of customized devices, participate in modifying a standard classroom or dining-room chair, and learn the fundamentals of cardboard carpentry. Hands-on activities will emphasize the versatility of multi-layer corrugated cardboard, an extremely durable material, ideal for customizing everything from positioning devices to work stations.
Ideal for: Social-service agencies, university students, community organizations, and others exploring social design.
Fee: $200 for each 6-hour course
Course time: 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. with lunch break

Introduction to Cardboard Carpentry (earn 1.0 AOTA CEU*)
Learn the fundamentals of cardboard carpentry through design and construction of a user-specific piece of adaptive equipment. This is an AOTA-accredited* course.
Day 1: Gain skills in cutting, bending, layering, joining, and edging. Use basic hand tools to construct a footrest or easel.
Day 2: Build a functional adaptation using three-layer corrugated cardboard (TriWall®) and power tools. We encourage you to bring sketches and measurements for a basic solution you have envisioned for a client. Starter projects include organizers, stools, or a basic project of your choice.
Ideal for: Therapists, teachers, and parents
Fee: $395 for each ten-hour course (includes $20 material fee)
Course time: 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. (includes 1 hour lunch)**

Advance courses are available for those who have completed Adaptive Design's 2-Day Course. Participants work semi-independently to develop their design and fabrication skills. Projects can be used and tested with clients.
Fee: $25 per hour (includes materials for cardboard-based projects)
Days/Hours: Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
